Week 18: Observations from FC Cincinnati training

FC Cincinnati let the bulk of the starters from Wednesday’s game against New York City FC finish early Friday as the media viewing portion of training began, but there didn’t appear to be any new issues in terms of injuries or illness.

Junior Moreno and Dom Badji remain out with leg injuries, and Calvin Harris has not yet returned from his trip back to the U.K. during the international break, where he was completing a green card application.

FCC will be without Obinna Nwobodo when the team travels to play New England on Sunday because of a yellow card accumulation suspension.

Notes from training Tuesday…

Alvas Powell was back in full-team training with FC Cincinnati on Tuesday after being cleared from health and safety protocols, but Junior Moreno and Dom Badji remain out of training as both are working through leg injuries.

That leaves just Moreno, Badji and Calvin Harris as the active players unavailable for Wednesday’s match against New York City FC. Harris remains out of the team while completing the green card process.

Goalkeeper Alec Kann also continues to progress in his return from injury that sidelined him two weeks. Coach Pat Noonan said Monday that Kann’s performance Saturday in the FCC 2 game was an important step in his return as he was able to achieve what the club wanted by getting competitive minutes in a lower stress environment.

It’s still unclear what rolle Kann will have, if any, in Wednesday’s match, but he remains available for selection.

Notes from Monday training…

FC Cincinnati has a short turnaround to the next game, so a couple players were doing extra recovery work Monday.

Veteran center back Geoff Cameron and rookie defender Ian Murphy both had a lighter workload Monday, as the team was beginning preparations for Eastern Conference second-place team New York City FC. Murphy entered Friday’s game against Orlando City in the 86th minute but also played 52 minutes in the FCC2 game Saturday. Cameron played the full 90 minutes Friday.

Junior Moreno and Dom Badji remained out of training Monday. Coach Pat Noonan said Moreno had a setback trying to get back into the group last week, and Badji is expected to be out a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, Alvas Powell remains in health and safety protocols and Calvin Harris is still awaiting his green card in the U.K.
